10/9/2017 One of the most important tests for identifying mineral specimens is the Mohs Hardness Test. This test compares the resistance of a mineral to being scratched by ten reference minerals known as the Mohs Hardness Scale (see table at left). The test is useful because most specimens of a given mineral are very close to the same hardness.

The first scale was devised by German geologist Friedrich Mohs. Mohs worked on cataloguing and developing a scale to evaluate the hardness of various minerals. In this way, he was able to determine that diamond is the hardest material. Cured concrete is a relatively hard material, as its hardness varies between 3 and 7 Mohs.
Scratch hardness shouldn't be confused with other types of material strength such as toughness. For example, a diamond has the highest scratch strength but is easily shattered with a hammer. Diamonds are commonly used to measure materials on the mohs scale.

Rocks are rated on the on the Moh's Hardness Scale which rates the rocks on the scale from 1 to 10. Rocks with hardness 1-3 are soft rocks from 3-6 are medium hardness rocks and 6-10 are hard rocks. The hardness of Hornfels is 2-3 whereas its compressive strength is 5.80 N/mm 2. Streak is the color of rock when it is crushed or powdered.
1/12/1987 Over a wide range of hardness and strength values, the average compressive strength (f c) varied linearly with the average hardness (R K) according to the relation f c (psi) = 560 R K 12000, irrespective of casting and curing variables.
How to Test Concrete Hardness using a MOHS Scale Concrete is made up of various elements of different hardness and densities that vary from region to region. Use of these picks is limited to providing a general guide for surface harness. Steps to testing: Start
Rocks are rated on the on the Moh's Hardness Scale which rates the rocks on the scale from 1 to 10. Rocks with hardness 1-3 are soft rocks from 3-6 are medium hardness rocks and 6-10 are hard rocks. The hardness of Gneiss is 7 whereas its compressive strength is 125.00 N/mm 2. Streak is the color of rock when it is crushed or powdered.
